Donating Leave: Leave Banks & Leave Transfers

Most employers provide employees with time off when they are ill. If an employee is absent longer than the allotted amount of time, he or she may be subject to discipline; a situation may occur where an employee who is chronically ill could require more leave time than normal. Donating leave, also called leave sharing, enable these employees to take off the time needed. Leave sharing programs allow workers to donate directly to individuals or a “leave bank.” These policies commonly set an amount of leave that must be donated by an employee before they can extract leave from the bank, and typically require employees to be a member of the leave bank for a certain amount of time before the donated days can be used.
