Below are some frequently asked questions to help give you more guidance on the new prerequisites and requirements needed for the IPMA-HR certification programs.
The IPMA-HR Senior Certified Professional (IPMA-SCP) designation is for public sector human resources professionals who have reached the manager, director, senior management, or executive level in their profession. The IPMA-HR Certified Professional (IPMA-CP) designation is now for entry to mid-level public sector HR professionals.
If you currently hold an IPMA-CP designation, you will be automatically upgraded to the IPMA-SCP and issued a new certificate.
To be eligible for the IPMA-SCP certification, your experience must be considered at the professional/managerial level and be considered exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). You must also meet one of the following education/experience prerequisites: a graduate-level degree and 2 years of HR experience, including 1 year in public sector HR; a bachelor’s degree and 4 years of HR experience, including 1 year in public sector HR; an associate's degree and 6 years of HR experience, including 1 year in public sector HR; or no degree, but have 8 years of HR experience, including 1 year in public sector HR.
First, review and make sure you meet the prerequisites for certification, then fill out the IPMA-SCP application and submit the appropriate fee. Once your completed application has been approved, you will be sent a login and password take the IPMA-SCP Exam online. Study guides are available for $85. When you have passed the exam, you will receive your certification credentials in the mail, along with recertification information and an opportunity to notify your supervisor of your accomplishment!
Yes, many of our members take the IPMA-HR Developing Competencies for HR Success program in order to prepare for the IPMA-SCP exam. However, taking the course is not required to become certified.
Candidates interested in securing an IPMA-CP designation must complete the IPMA-HR Public Sector HR Essentials program AND pass the new IPMA-CP exam (new exam will be available during the second quarter: April-June 2016). The online Public Sector HR Essentials Program is offered three times a year: January – May (winter), April – August (spring), and August – December (fall). When you pass your exam, a congratulatory message will be sent to you, along with your certificate, stating you have successfully completed the Public Sector HR Essentials Program.
To retain your certification for the IPMA-SCP and IPMA-CP, an individual must accumulate 50 recertification points every three years and submit a completed Criteria for Recertification Form. Go to Recertification for more information.
