Job Description: 

The City of Fort Lauderdale is located on the beautiful southeast coast of Florida and offers an outstanding quality of life, highlighted by a semi-tropical climate, natural beauty, and an array of cultural, entertainment and recreational amenities. The City has a Commission-Manager form of government, employs a workforce of approximately 2,500 full-time employees, and has several collective bargaining units. The Human Resources Department has approximately 40 FTEs and partners with departments to hire, train, and retain a qualified, healthy and diverse professional workforce for the delivery of excellent services to the community. Divisions within the Department include Talent Management (which includes Classification and Compensation, Recruitment & Assessment, Organizational Development and Learning), Risk Management (Employee Benefits, Property and Casualty Claims, Safety and Training), and Employee Relations. The Deputy Human Resources Director reports to the Human Resources Director, serves as an advisor and liaison to senior management throughout the City, and provides strong leadership at both the strategic and transactional level including planning, managing and supervising the day-to-day operations of multiple Human Resources functions.

Job Requirements (Optional): 

Requirements for the position include a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Public Administration or closely related field; a Master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of five (5) years combined experience in an advanced level managerial role in a full-service HR Department is required, three (3) years of which must have required the direct supervision of professional level staff primarily responsible for Classification and Compensation, Recruitment and Assessment, and Organizational Development. Candidates possessing a Master’s degree may substitute two years of the required experience; however, education will NOT substitute for the three years of the experience requiring the supervision of professional level staff. Experience within municipal government and certifications such as SPHR is a plus. Must be approachable, highly-skilled at conflict resolution, and have demonstrated a highly collaborative approach to employee relations.
