Public Sector HR Network Launched in Africa
The Africa Public Sector Human Resource Managers’ Network was launched during a workshop that was held in 2009 in Arusha, Tanzania. The Network is assisted by the United Nations. The initiative to develop a public sector HR managers’ network in Africa was first discussed at the 2007 IPMA-HR International Symposium in Cape Town, South Africa. A small group of participants at that meeting volunteered to work to make the network a reality. The goal of the network is to enhance the professionalization of human resource management in the public sector in African nations.
Additional workshops have been held by the Africa Public Sector Human Resource Managers’ Network in Cotonou, Benin in 2010 and in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2011. These workshops were supported by the United Nations. IPMA-HR Executive Director Neil Reichenberg participated in the three workshops held by the Network.
In 2012, IPMA-HR is partnering with the Africa Public Sector Human Resource Managers Network and the United Nations on the development of a survey of public sector HR practices in the national governments of Africa.
George Yambesi, Permanent Secretary, President’s Office – Public Service Management, United Republic of Tanzania serves as the president of the Network.
