Customized Test Service

Or maybe you’re testing for a rank we don’t have a stock test for at all. When you run into a "square peg/round hole" testing situation, our Customized Test Service can help, enabling you to create tests for upper-level positions that meet your department's individual needs. Our service enables you to create specialized promotional tests that assess the competencies essential for success in upper-level positions (i.e., the rank of captain or above) within your law enforcement agency or fire department, such as:

  • Captain.
  • Major.
  • Battalion Chief.
  • Assistant Chief.
  • Deputy Chief.
  • Chief.

Creating your own customized test is easy! Simply combine test items from any of the following three sources:

  1. Items from our Test Item Bank.
  2. New test items drafted by our Item Writing Service.
  3. Items written by your agency.

 

Preview your test! With both semi-stock and fully customized tests, nothing is final until you’ve had a chance to review a preliminary copy of your test.

Please email the Assessment Services Department to request a free customization packet — be sure to specify whether you're interested in a police or fire customized test. Note: A Test Security Agreement must be on file prior to receiving the packet.

Item Writing Service

Our Item Writing Service offers you the opportunity to include unique, professionally-written test items for use in your semistock and fully customized promotional tests — or as an addition to your in-house tests. You may include original test items based on your choice of outside source materials, for example: departmental policies and procedures, training manuals, and other relevant texts.

Please note that IPMA-HR's membership discount cannot be used toward this service.

Reading List

Please be aware that you will work with an IPMA-HR customer service representative to create a required reading list for this test. Candidates must receive this reading list 60 days or more prior to the exam. Be sure to allow enough time for candidates to locate a copy of each book (which could take up to two weeks if candidates order copies online) and study all the books (suggested minimum of 60 days).

Pricing

Non-Rush Orders

(More than 3 weeks from testing date)

$10.00 per question with a 75-question minimum + $395 labor fee.

  • Two additional questions per knowledge area will be included on your Preliminary Test from the Item Bank so you can choose the most appropriate questions. If you decide to keep the two additional questions on your Final Test, you will be charged for them. Please note that additional questions will not be provided through the Item Writing Service.
  • If a Preliminary Test is not requested, you will be billed for the number of questions you request for your Final Test.

If you choose to use IPMA-HR’s Item Writing Service to include questions from an outside source material of your choice, these questions will cost $58.00 per question with a $395 labor fee.

Rush Orders

(3 weeks or less from testing date)

$10.00 per question with a 75-question minimum + $395 labor fee + $500 rush shipment fee.

  • Two additional questions per knowledge area will be included on your Preliminary Test from the Item Bank so you can choose the most appropriate questions. If you decide to keep the two additional questions on your Final Test, you will be charged for them. Please note that additional questions will not be provided through the Item Writing Service.
  • If a Preliminary Test is not requested, you will be billed for the number of questions you request for your Final Test.
  • IPMA-HR’s item writing service is not available for rush orders.
